Back to work before the Bucs

JACKSONVILLE, Florida. – Am I the only one who is just marking days on the calendar to get to the joint practice by Wednesday? Maybe I’m the only one, but we’re only a few days away from the first of two joint practices for the Jaguars against the Buccaneers. Anything else just feels disappointing.

Monday’s practice was a glorified walkthrough. It was a clean-up day. After Saturday’s game against the Chiefs, they used practice to work out mistakes and prepare for the Bucs. There will be more of the same on Tuesday.

For players trying to earn a place in the squad, training together is hugely important, but for players who were on the team last season, there is also a little revenge factor.

“We have to fight back,” said cornerback Buster Brown.

Brown was a top backup for the Jaguars last season, and his highlight was a potentially game-winning pass defense against the Saints. Brown is entering his third year in the NFL and said he’s “just taking it day by day.”

Training camp is a long road ahead and Brown is fighting for a spot in the DB room. With a new coaching staff, things are different for everyone, but Brown likes it.

“I think this is the best role for me,” he said.

Perhaps the biggest change in defense is in the secondary, which is moving from a zone-heavy to a man-to-man-heavy scheme. The DB department all seems to love the change.

“You have to love it and embrace it,” Brown said.

Notebook

  • It was a walk-through tour. Nothing more needs to be said

  • Highs and lows of the day: The highlight was Darnell Savage’s interception of a pass from Trevor Lawrence. The low was that the pass hit Tank Bigsby in the hands before landing in Savage’s hands.
  • Ventrell Miller is explosive. He can really make up a lot of ground. The biggest question mark seems to be whether he can stay healthy.
  • Breeland Speaks is new to the team and had to leave the training field briefly due to the heat. However, he was able to return and finish the training.
