Back to School: Comparing the Best Kid-Safe Phones and Options from Bark, Pinwheel and Gabb

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — If you want to give your child a new phone in time for the new school year, these companies promise to offer “child-proof” phones.

From Bark to Pinwheel to Gabb, we’ve thoroughly researched plans to help you find the right option for your family.

We found that they all offer GPS tracking, but there are differences.

“There is a phone called Bark that allows parents to manage screen time or block certain websites and track their children’s location,” said CNET’s Abrar Al-Heeti.

Bark lets parents approve downloads from the app store, and it monitors messages, websites and social media, as well as photos and videos – and claims to offer the most coverage of any tool.

“It can alert you if it notices anything suspicious that your child may encounter,” Al-Heeti said. “And the cool thing is that as your child gets older, you can also allow or remove certain features.”

The Bark phone is included for free with a Bark plan, but you can’t choose the carrier. The Starter plan costs $39 a month, but doesn’t include social media or a web browser. The Advanced plan costs $49 a month and includes internet access. You can also get the Bark app for $14 for any mobile device.

“Pinwheel is a child-safe phone product,” Pinwheel CEO Dane Witbeck told Troubleshooters.

Pinwheel phones do not have a web browser or social media option and allow parents to view text message history remotely. Additionally, 1,500 apps available on the phone have been audited to help parents decide which apps their children can access.

“We have five different models, which is another differentiator,” he said. “We have a lot of different phones. You can choose from everything from $99 to get started all the way up to Google Pixels for $599.”

You can use any carrier you want, but in addition to the cost of the phone, there is an annual Pinwheel subscription fee of $14.99 per month for the first phone. For each additional phone, Pinwheel charges $4.99 per month.

“There is something called Gabb Phone 4,” Al-Heeti added.

Like Pinwheel, this is a more restrictive device with no social media or web browser. However, it comes with essential apps and parents can add more.

“And then there’s a pretty cool app called Gabb Music,” Al-Heeti said. “And that’s a clean music library, so there are no explicit lyrics in any of the songs you see in that library. And then it also blocks any suspicious messages or images.”

Gabb offers three models, including a watch for younger children and the Gabb Phone 4 for children ages 9 to 13.

And then there is the Gabb Phone 4 PRO.

“So if your child is a little older, it’s better for teenagers because parents can allow certain apps but still not use social media,” Al-Heeti said.

Currently, you can get the Gabb Phone 4 for free if you sign up for a Gab plan, which costs about $25 per month. Otherwise, Gabb devices start at $150.
