The U.S. Energy Information Administration (“EIA”) released a report on August 20 titled:

Average state tax rates for retail sales of gasoline and diesel fuel unchanged since January 2024 (“Report”).

The report concludes that national average tax rates remained virtually unchanged as of July 1, 2024.

State taxes and fees on gasoline and diesel fuel average $0.33 per gallon of gasoline and $0.35 per gallon of diesel fuel.

There were exceptions, however. In Kentucky, the decline was the largest, from $0.023 to $0.2780 per gallon.

Gasoline taxes are said to have been raised in nine states. The biggest increase was in Indiana, where the rate rose from $0.044 to $0.5610 per gallon.

Federal tax rates will remain at $0.1840 per gallon for gasoline and $0.2440 per gallon for diesel, including the excise tax and $0.001 per gallon charged to the Leaking Underground Storage Tank Fund.

Note that the Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration lists the following for two fuels:

  • Gasoline $0.247 per gallon.
  • Clear diesel $0.285 per gallon.
