Availability report for Rutgers-Virginia Tech: Scarlet Knights get key starters back for decisive game

BLACKSBURG, Va. — After a much-needed off week, Rutgers is as healthy as it has ever been this fall for one of the most important games on the schedule.

The Scarlet Knights (2-0) have defensive end Wesley Bailey, defensive tackle Troy Rainey and linebacker Tyreem Powell available for Saturday’s game against Virginia Tech (2-1) at Lane Stadium, a person familiar with the situation told NJ Advance Media. The trio’s availability was listed as questionable in the availability report submitted to the Big Ten before the game.

They get running back Samuel Brown and cornerback Al-Shadee Salaam back after both missed at least one game. Brown played against Howard but did not play against Akron. Salaam, a backup at cornerback, could make his debut against Virginia Tech.

The biggest headline will be Powell’s availability. The Vineland High School graduate tore his Achilles tendon in February but has hit all the milestones in his recovery. As captain of the defense, Powell was leading the team with 53 tackles when he suffered a season-ending wrist injury in Rutgers’ eighth game against Indiana last season.

Like Powell, Rainey and Bailey have yet to make their season debut.

As for Virginia Tech, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, the selections of two of its key players – running back Bhayshul Tuten and wide receiver Ali Jennings – are not confirmed until shortly before the game.

The Rutgers vs. Virginia Tech game kicks off at 3:30 p.m. in Virginia.
