Auburn returns Payton Thorne at QB for its Week 5 matchup against No. 21 Oklahoma

Auburn (2-2) is making another quarterback change. After opting for redshirt freshman Hank Brown in the last two games, coach Hugh Freeze is returning senior Payton Thorne, who began the season as the Tigers’ starter.

Thorne will get the start of Auburn’s Week 5 matchup against No. 21 Oklahoma (3-1). Freeze’s return to Thorne seems odd since he said after last week’s 24-14 loss to Arkansas that the team “needs a guy who won’t blame it on the other team.”

In his last two starts this season, Thorne threw four interceptions and Freeze criticized his decision-making before switching to Brown. However, against Arkansas, Brown threw three interceptions and completed 7 of 13 passes before being replaced by Thorne midway through the game. This more recent memory, along with the fact that Thorne played better (13 of 22 for 213 yards, two touchdowns, one INT), may have influenced the coach’s decision.

Overall, Auburn has committed 14 turnovers in its first four games, including eight interceptions and six lost fumbles.

According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Freeze also apparently hopes that Thorne’s experience against different types of defenses will give Auburn’s offense a better chance to compete against Oklahoma.

However, according to a former Freeze signalman, the coach tends to blame the quarterback for his teams’ poor play.

“We’re getting to the point where he’s pressured so many QBs that maybe nobody wants to play for him anymore,” said Bo Wallace, who played for Freeze at Ole Miss from 2012-14.

Oklahoma will deal with quarterback issues of its own on Saturday as freshman Michael Hawkins Jr. plays opposite sophomore Jackson Arnold, who has started the Sooners’ last four games. Turnovers were also the main influence in coach Brett Venables’ decision, with Arnold throwing a pick and losing two fumbles in last week’s loss to No. 5 Tennessee.

Auburn and Oklahoma begin at 3:30 p.m. ET at Jordan-Hare Stadium on Saturday. Kickoff is at 3:30 p.m. ET and the game will be televised on ABC.
