AT&T fixes software bug that caused disruption to cellular service in several U.S. cities, including Los Angeles, Dallas and New York – AT&T (NYSE:T)

AT&T Inc. T has fixed a software bug that caused cellular service interruption for some users on Tuesday.

What happened: The issue started around 5:00 PM ET and peaked at 7:00 PM ET, as tracked by Downdetector. By 10:00 PM ET, the number of reported issues had dropped significantly.

The outage affected several cities, including Dallas, Charlotte, Los Angeles, Houston, Chicago and New York City, but was not nationwide.

Authorities across the country reported that the outage may have affected some customers’ ability to call 911. Cities including Pinole, California, and North Little Rock, Arkansas, confirmed the problem but later reported that service had been restored.

“We have fixed a software issue that was disrupting our cellular network for a limited number of our customers,” an AT&T spokesperson told CNN on Wednesday. “We apologize for the inconvenience and thank our customers for their patience while we work to resolve this issue.”

Why it is important The timing of this outage is particularly significant given AT&T’s recent financial performance and market activity. At the end of July, AT&T reported its second-quarter results, which analysts said showed a good balance between growth and profitability.

The company added 997,000 mobile customers in the second quarter, but narrowly missed revenue estimates.

Due to its high yield, AT&T remains a popular choice among dividend investors. In early August, analysts recommended buying AT&T shares due to its attractive dividend yield.

Price promotion: AT&T stock closed at $19.65 on Tuesday, down 0.56% on the day. The stock was down slightly by 0.25% in premarket trading. Year-to-date, AT&T stock has gained 13.91%, according to data from Benzinga Pro.
