ORANGE — One of three women hospitalized after being struck by a fallen tree Friday has been released from Athol Hospital, while another is in stable condition and the third is in critical condition, Northwestern District Attorney’s Office spokeswoman Laurie Loisel confirmed Monday.

According to Orange Police Chief James Sullivan, one of the three women suffered “significant, life-threatening injuries.” The women were sitting in a car parked outside 24 Maple Street around 4 p.m. Friday afternoon when a tree that Sullivan said “was about to be cut down” fell on the back of the vehicle, injuring the women in the car.

All three women were taken to Athol Hospital with varying degrees of injuries. Sullivan said two of the three women were unresponsive, one of whom later regained consciousness, when Orange police and firefighters arrived on Maple Street.

“The tree was pulled down by other people in the house before” police arrived, Sullivan said when reached by phone Friday. “A woman who has a little girl has life-threatening injuries.”

According to a written statement from the Orange Fire Department, rescue helicopters were requested but their missions were grounded due to strong winds.

At 5:45 p.m. Friday, Sullivan said the Massachusetts State Police investigative unit was en route to Orange.
