Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat was disqualified on Wednesday before the women’s 50kg freestyle final at the Paris Olympics for failing to make the weight, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) said.

Phogat was supposed to compete for the gold medal with Sarah Hildebrandt from the USA.

“It is with regret that the Indian delegation announces the news of the disqualification of Vinesh Phogat from the women’s 50 kg category in wrestling,” the IOA said in a statement.

“Despite the team’s efforts during the night, this morning she weighed a few grams over 50 kilos.”

The disqualification means that Phogat will not receive a medal.

United World Wrestling, the sport’s international governing body, has not yet issued a statement. — Reuters
