“At this point I’m losing control”: Former Republican senator from swing states explains why he won’t vote for Trump

During Donald Trump’s presidency, then-conservative Senator Pat Toomey (Republican, Pennsylvania) was not exactly known as a “Never Trumper.” In fact, he voted for him in 2016.

But when Trump tried to overturn the result of the 2020 presidential election, Toomey refused to follow him. And he did not run for re-election in 2022. Then Democrat John Fetterman took over a U.S. Senate seat that had been predominantly Republican for decades – first under the late Senator Arlen Specter, then under Toomey.

Many Republicans who have at times criticized Trump have joined him in supporting him in the 2024 election. But during an appearance on CNBC’s “Squawk Box” on Tuesday, September 3, Toomey made it clear that he will not vote for Trump in November – although he will not vote for Democratic candidate Kamala Harris either.

“If you lose an election and try to overturn the outcome to stay in power,” Toomey stressed, “then you lose me. At that point, you lose me… I recognize that the outcome is a binary situation, but my choice is not… It is an acceptable position for me to say that none of these candidates can be my choice for president.”

Toomey predicted that Democrats would lose their majority in the Senate.

“The good news is I think Republicans will win the Senate,” Toomey said.

The former senator added that if Harris defeats Trump in November but Republicans win the Senate majority, they should “stick tough” on Harris’ nominations.
