ASU’s third drive of the game stalled, but Ian Hershey salvaged some points for the Sun Devils by kicking a 47-yard field goal.

It’s the length of his career.

Sam Leavitt failed to complete a long pass to Jake Smith on the previous play. He completed 5 of 11 passes for 54 yards in the game but didn’t have to use his arm much.

Leavitt rushed for 54 yards on five carries and Arizona State rushed for 140 yards on 18 carries as a team, led by Cam Skattebo with nine runs of 80 yards.

Score: ASU Sun Devils 13, Mississippi State Bulldogs 3 (9:33 remaining in second quarter)

The Bulldogs would have preferred a touchdown, but Mississippi State was able to score just in time with a 32-yard field goal by Kyle Ferrie to cap a 12-play, 71-yard drive.

After two 3-and-outs, Mississippi State’s offense desperately needed to get something going, and it did so, even though its drive stalled deep in ASU territory.

Blake Shapen has now completed 5 of 9 passes for 68 yards in the game for the Bulldogs. Mississippi State still hasn’t been able to accomplish much on the ground and has only rushed for five yards.

But it came on the scoreboard.

Arizona State just forced Mississippi State into its second 3-and-out early in the game at Mountain America Stadium.

Not a bad start for ASU.

The ASU football team got off to a great start with their win over Wyoming last week.

The same thing happened on Saturday night at Mountain America Stadium in Tempe.

The Sun Devils forced a 3-and-out from Mississippi State on the Bulldogs’ opening drive, then marched 79 yards down the field in 10 plays and 4:11 minutes to take a 7-0 lead on a 17-yard run by QB Sam Leavitt.

That’s enough.

Leavitt had two runs for 32 yards on the drive, including the touchdown run. Cam Skattebo had three runs for 24 yards.
