Asheville water system “severely damaged” by Helene; Repairs in progress

A preliminary assessment on Saturday morning, Sept. 28, indicated that Hurricane Helene caused severe damage to the City of Asheville’s water system, the City of Asheville said in a news release.

Major repairs to the water system will be required and the City of Asheville’s Water Resources Department is already beginning to acquire the necessary equipment and personnel.

City of Asheville spokesperson Christy Edwards provided an update on service restoration:

Helene was a generational weather event. Although it is impossible to give an exact timeline, restoring service will require a lengthy effort. We appreciate your patience as we devote every possible resource to rebuilding the damaged portions of our water system.

The City of Asheville is advising anyone who currently has water to fill bathtubs and other containers to prepare for loss of service. However, a boil water advisory remains in effect.
