Two days after Hurricane Francine made landfall in Louisiana as a Category 2 storm, New Orleans’ power supply is still unstable. Literally — in neighborhoods across the city, one block may have power on while the next is still dark. Although Francine has now been classified as a tropical depression, utility companies are still working to restore power to thousands of customers who lost electricity.
On Thursday, Sept. 12, Pizza Delicious on Piety Street in the Bywater neighborhood was as busy as could be, with wait times for a custom takeout pizza reaching up to an hour. A block upriver on Louisa Street, however, Sneaky Pickle still had no power and had been closed since the outage on Wednesday, Sept. 11. As of Friday, Sneaky Pickle is still without power, but the hip neighborhood restaurant known for its creative use of vegetables is getting creative in other ways. By mid-afternoon, chef and owner Ben Tabor planned to drag his pizza oven and pizza platter out to the sidewalk and sell a limited selection of takeout food, as well as wine, beer and other beverages. “We were getting impatient just sitting around waiting for the power to come back,” Tabor says.
