A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a 43-year-old woman was stabbed to death and two other people suffered life-threatening injuries.
The woman, known locally as Alberta Obinim, died at the scene of the accident on Barnard Road in Gorton at around 11.20pm BST on Sunday.
A 17-year-old girl and a 64-year-old man were taken to hospital for treatment.
Initial investigations indicated that the victims knew the 22-year-old suspect, Greater Manchester Police said.
The arrested man was taken into custody for questioning by detectives.
The injured girl and the man suffered “serious stab wounds” in the attack and their condition is “currently believed to be life-threatening,” police said.
Barnard Road has been closed while officers investigate from behind a police cordon.
Three forensic tents were set up, one in a garden, one on the street and one on a property in the street.
Plainclothes officers were seen knocking on doors, while others in white overalls and protective clothing walked the streets.
A person living within the exclusion zone said BBC Radio Manchester he woke up and heard “a lot of shouting and noise.”
Another person said one “wouldn’t expect to see such a large police presence in the area,” and yet another said it was unexpected for a “beautiful, quiet” place.
Police said the stabbing was being treated as an “isolated incident.”
Sergeant Adrian Girtchen said: “We can feel the shockwaves this incident has sent through the local community who either witnessed the attack or woke up this morning to hear the tragic news.”
“Many of you may know the family and our thoughts and wishes are with them and all those affected.”
Det Supt Toby Facey had previously stated that an investigation had been launched and police were still at a “very early stage of our investigation”. He added that the number of police patrols in the area would be increased.
GMP appealed to anyone with information about the attack to come forward.
