In a video posted to Instagram on Tuesday, Armie Hammer announced that he is starting “a new life in Los Angeles,” saying that he has to sell his truck because he “can’t afford the gas anymore.”
“I’ve been back in LA for a couple of weeks now,” Hammer says in the video, which was shot at a CarMax location in California. “This is my truck. I bought it for myself as a Christmas present in 2017 because I’ve had pickup trucks for a long time and I love this truck and have taken it camping and across the country and on long road trips several times. … Since I’ve been back in LA, I’ve put about $400 or $500 worth of gas in it, and I can’t afford that.”
Hammer was living (and working as a timeshare salesman) in the Cayman Islands after sexual abuse allegations made him a pariah in Hollywood in 2021. Due to the allegations — which included rape, cannibalism fantasies and coercing partners into BDSM scenarios — the “Social Network” and “Call Me by Your Name” actor dropped out of several projects, was dropped by his publicist and agent and became the subject of an LAPD investigation. Ultimately, no charges were filed against Hammer, who has denied the allegations and claimed all relationships were consensual.
In recent months, Hammer has returned to the media spotlight, giving interviews on Bill Maher’s “Club Random” podcast, Tom Arnold’s “Painful Lessons” show and “Piers Morgan Uncensored.” He has denied all allegations of sexual harassment while admitting to other “shitty behavior,” such as cheating on his wife and “using people to make myself feel better.” Hammer said being “cancelled” and banned from the entertainment industry was “liberating,” but he also announced that he has written a screenplay that reflects his life and hopes to return to the film business.
“Here’s to a new beginning,” Hammer said in the video released on Tuesday. “Tomorrow is my birthday. On August 28th, I will start my birthday in a new car, in a new apartment and in a new life in Los Angeles.”
He thought about various memories associated with the truck, including bringing his newborn children home from the hospital. “Thank you,” he said, tapping the steering wheel. “You’ve brought me a long way, and I appreciate it. I hope you take such good care of the next person.”
Hammer said he already has a new car, a “tiny” hybrid that will probably only use “$10 in gas a month.” “I keep telling myself that parking will be easier and gas will be cheaper,” he said.
