Armed suspect threatens hotel staff and police near high school: SMPD

SANTA MONICA, CALIFORNIA — An armed suspect caused panic in Santa Monica on Tuesday when he threatened staff at the Hilton Santa Monica and then fled toward the 4th Street Breezeway by Santa Monica High School, police said.

According to Santa Monica police, the man was eventually arrested after being shot with a taser and 40mm projectiles.

The incident occurred on Tuesday around noon.

According to police, the man threatened hotel staff with a hammer and then fled toward the high school when police arrived at the scene.

“Fortunately, there were no students nearby. Despite repeated requests, the suspect refused to drop the hammer and continued his threats,” Santa Monica Police posted on social media. “Officers deployed a taser and 40mm projectiles to safely apprehend the suspect. The suspect was evaluated by the Santa Monica Fire Department and transported to a local hospital for further evaluation per fire department policy.”

The suspect was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.

The police department has remained in contact with the high school, which keeps its gate locked and restricts access during the day, the police department said.
