He’s used to being in the spotlight now, and not just in basketball. Just think of where he was today when he rang the bell at the New York Stock Exchange.

Bacot’s former prep school, IMG Academy, has signed a three-year agreement with Merrill Wealth Management to provide financial education and resources to IMG student-athletes and their families. Many of IMG’s graduates go on to pursue careers as professional athletes in a variety of sports, so knowing how to manage and build their wealth is paramount when they sign their first professional contract.

Greg McGauley, Head of Private Wealth Management, International and Institutional Groups at Merrill, said of the partnership with IMG:

“Today, athletes must navigate an increasingly complex financial landscape and must make decisions at a young age that can have a significant impact on their future. That’s why this partnership with IMG Academy is so important and timely. It provides students and their parents with the education and resources to help them make informed financial decisions now and in the future.”

Don’t be surprised if we see more and more partnerships like this between NCAA schools and financial or investment firms. Money loves money, and as more and more of it flows into college sports, the athletes who have money to spend need to learn how to invest it properly. I’d like to point out that I still never do calculations in my day-to-day life, but financial literacy is at the forefront of my mind every day.

Armando Bacot may be the poster boy for this new paradigm for student-athletes and entrepreneurs. Let’s hope future heels can be as successful as he was in these murky waters.
