Argentine star Alvarez moves to Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid have completed the signing of Julian Alvarez from Manchester City on a six-year contract.

The deal is said to be worth more than $124 million, plus possible add-ons worth an additional $33 million.

This represents a significant gain for a player signed for $23 million from River Plate and underscores City coach Pep Guardiola’s willingness to let dissatisfied players go.

He has won the Premier League twice and the Champions League, FA Cup, Super Cup and Club World Cup once each, as well as winning the 2022 World Cup with Argentina and the Copa America earlier this year.

Alvarez scored 36 goals in 103 appearances in all competitions for City, but despite being Argentina’s first choice, he was behind Erling Haaland in City’s pecking order.

The 24-year-old said on City’s website: “Today I say goodbye to this great club with a lot of emotion. These have been two very special years. During this time I have grown and learned a lot – both as a player and as a person.”

City football director Txiki Begiristain said Alvarez’s “attitude has been first class since he first walked through the door here.”

“That’s why he has improved so much,” added Begiristain. “The trophies he has won already speak for themselves – he is a winner. I look forward to watching his continued development as his career progresses.”
