Nine Inch Nails, the band with musician Trent Reznor as headliner, composes the film music for Tron: AresDisney announced on Friday at D23.
The revelation came during a first look at the science fiction film starring Jared Leto and directed by Joachim Ronning.
And contained some excerpts from the score work so far. The previous part, Tron: Legacyhad a genre-defining score by Daft Punk, so the bar is set high for the new film.
Reznor formed NIN in the late 1980s as an industrial hard rock band, although Reznor himself composed and played the instruments on the albums. However, when NIN went on tour, the frontman assembled members who would alternate between joining and leaving. The band was hugely influential in the 1990s, receiving numerous Grammy nominations and a few awards for the songs “Wish” and “Happiness in Slavery.”
Reznor began scoring films in 2010 when he teamed up with Atticus Ross for David Fincher’s The social networkThey began a collaboration that continued in numerous Fincher films. The duo’s recent releases included compositions for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem And Challenger.
Ross became an official NIN member in 2016.
When the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2020, six current and former members were listed – Ross, Robin Finck, Chris Vrenna, Danny Lohner, Ilan Rubin and Allessandro Cortini.
“Technology and AI are ubiquitous in our lives,” said Jeff Bridges, one of the stars of the original 1982 film, who returns for this installment. “What a perfect time to revisit that world. Or to have that world come to us, because that’s exactly what happens in this film.”
After a performance by actors Jared Leto, Evan Peters and Greta Lee, some stunning footage was shown. Then a red laser revealed the iconic NIN logo, causing the crowd to scream. Doors opened on stage to reveal two figures, Reznor and Ross.
