Are you coming to Detroit for the Lions’ season opener? What you need to know

The Detroit Lions face Matthew Stafford and the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday night at Ford Field in downtown Detroit, which will likely mean a lot of traffic.

The City of Detroit has released some tips and pointers for fans attending the game or attending a nearby cookout to help them make the most of their visit.

Traffic congestion is expected to begin around 2 p.m. Sunday prior to the 8:20 p.m. kickoff. The city recommends taking the M-10 (Lodge Freeway) to get downtown and avoid the expected congestion at the Interstate 75 Grand River exit and the Interstate 375 Madison Avenue exit.

Once downtown, fans can park on Woodward Avenue and ride the QLine, which will be open until midnight to allow people to commute between downtown and Midtown. For $5, people can park in lot 12 at 6050 Woodward Avenue on the Wayne State University campus near Harper Street and the Amsterdam stop on the QLine.

The People Mover is closed until mid-November due to track replacement and is not accessible on Sundays.

If you come to the city center, you can also reserve many parking spaces and parking garages in advance using the ParkDetroit app.

While there is no parking enforcement on Sundays, on-street parking is only permitted in designated parking meter zones or on streets without parking meters where parking may be permitted.

The city recommends that visitors park in designated parking lots where fees are posted. Inspectors will be on site to ensure that parking lots do not charge more than the city ordinance allows.

Visitors should also be cautious when parking in free parking spaces, whether someone is charging for it or not. Scammers have been known to lure people into parking spaces that do not belong to them and charge for parking. In these cases, the owner may have the vehicles towed.

Tailgaters are strongly encouraged to reserve in advance to secure a spot. Tailgating spots at Eastern Market are already sold out and will open at 2:00 p.m. for those who have already reserved their spot.

Tailgating and drinking are not allowed on the street.
