Arch Manning’s family gave Pat McAfee insight into the quarterback’s future in Texas

As Arch Manning prepares for his first official college start in the No. 1 Texas Longhorns’ game against Louisiana-Monroe on Saturday night, there are already questions about his future in the program.

Manning is filling in for starting quarterback Quinn Ewers, who is still recovering from an abdominal strain suffered in the Longhorns’ 56-7 win over UTSA last week.

If Manning performs well at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, will the Longhorns hold on to his success or go back to Ewers when he’s ready to return?

“I actually reached out to the Manning department to get their opinion on the whole situation,” Pat McAfee said on Saturday on the ESPN broadcast College Game Day“The reality is, if Arch Manning throws five touchdowns again today against this Louisiana-Monroe team and runs over 20 miles per hour – the fastest Manning in history – there will be calls to put him on the field.”

“The Manning family, however, said, ‘No, no, no.’ They’re old school. You never lose your job because of an injury. Arch Manning wants to be in the program for four years. He wants to develop. There’s no rush to get to the NFL. He loves Quinn Ewers.”

“They know this is going to be a topic of conversation, but they’ve already tried to sort it out somehow before it even starts.”

There you have it. Once Ewers is healthy, the Manning family wants him to keep the starting quarterback position regardless of how Arch performs in his first career start.

Manning, the nephew of former NFL quarterbacks Peyton and Eli Manning, has lived up to his last name so far this season. Through two games, Manning has thrown for 318 yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions on 14 of 18 passing. He also ran an explosive 67-yard touchdown in the second quarter of Texas’ win over UTSA last week, reaching a top speed of 20.7 mph.

The top-seeded Longhorns’ game against Louisiana-Monroe is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. ET on Saturday. It will be Texas’ last nonconference game before SEC play against Mississippi State begins next week.
