Arc of the Ozarks celebrates 60 years of service

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – The Arc of the Ozarks celebrated its 60th anniversary. The organization helps people with intellectual and developmental challenges.

Arc of the Ozarks staff, community supporters and clients gathered to celebrate six decades of service. President and CEO Michael Powers has been with the team for over 30 years. He says the organization’s impact has grown tremendously, but they’re working to meet the need.

“When I came to Arc, we had 135 employees,” Power said. “Now we have over 1,600. Last year we served more than 4,000 people with disabilities. We can do more to help our people get competitive jobs in the community, and I think with the help and support of the partners we have in the community, we will get things like that done.”

In the early 1960s, Springfield did not have many facilities for the handicapped. In response, a group of parents came together to better serve the needs of their children. Their efforts led to the creation of The Arc of the Ozarks.
