Since ChatGPT launched in late 2022, all that’s been heard on the news is “AI is taking over the world,” but as with any new technology, there comes a period when the hype wears off and everything comes back down to earth. A new IT survey for small and medium-sized businesses shows that there is AI fatigue among IT teams.

The hype about AI is dying down

The survey makes it very clear: the hype around AI has died down. Now that the initial hype is over, IT teams are approaching AI with clear optimism and are carefully distinguishing between what is truly promising and what is just chatter.

IT teams have mixed feelings about AI. When asked how their views on the impact of AI have changed over the past six months, 22% say it is much less significant than initially thought; 34% believe the impact will remain the same but develop more slowly than expected; 21%, meanwhile, have not changed their minds and 23% think the impact of AI is even more significant than expected.

Despite these concerns, IT teams are committed to using AI responsibly, with 61 percent agreeing that AI is evolving faster than their organization’s ability to defend against threats. Over a third of IT administrators (35%) are concerned about the impact of AI on their work, down from 45% in Q1 2024.

“IT teams face many obstacles. They face economic and election uncertainty, growing security threats, complex technology stacks, and device diversity. Despite all of this and more, IT administrators are resilient and resourceful,” said Greg Keller, co-founder and chief technology officer. “What keeps them up at night is what they can’t see – 84% of IT administrators worry about shadow IT. To combat the security gaps that shadow IT creates, IT must deploy tools that help detect rogue apps. This gives IT teams the control and visibility they need to keep organizations secure.”

Other important findings

• Shadow IT is on the rise: unauthorized apps and services are creating a larger attack surface and IT teams are desperately trying to get them under control.
• Device overload: The number of computers, phones, tablets and other devices that need to be supported is growing. IT teams are looking for a flexible and secure solution.
• Security concerns: As threats increase, SMBs are stepping up their defenses. Despite increased investment by senior management, IT administrators are unsure if this is enough to fend off attacks.
• Incomplete IT systems: Using a mix of different solutions leads to frustration and security gaps. IT professionals want a more unified way to manage identities, devices and access.
• MSPs to the rescue: As complexity increases, Managed Service Providers (MSPs) are becoming more and more important. However, SMEs also place higher demands on their performance.
