APD: Suspect killed in standoff near downtown

According to police, a suspect was shot and killed during a confrontation with police officers near downtown Albuquerque on Saturday.

ALBUQUERQUE, NM — Police say a suspect was shot and killed during a standoff with police officers near downtown Albuquerque on Saturday.

On Saturday around 2:30 p.m., officers responded to a domestic violence call at the Family Dollar on Broadway. When they arrived, a manager allegedly told them someone was shoplifting. The suspect allegedly ran away and pulled out a gun on officers who were pursuing him.

The suspect then reportedly barricaded himself in a shed on Arno Road. Officers set up a cordon and attempted to negotiate with the suspect. At some point, he reportedly fired a shot.

“By the time they had a warrant for the person’s arrest, about two hours had already passed when they tried to negotiate with the person and give him orders. They tried to call the person with the throw phone 60 times,” said APD Chief Harold Medina.

The officers called the special operations unit. After almost two hours of negotiations, the police shot the suspect at around 7 p.m.

No officers were injured. The officers involved in the shooting are on regular administrative leave.
