Any app you can uninstall or disable

Motorola offers an excellent range of affordable phones without a complicated user interface. These phones are great for minimalist users who just want a smartphone for everyday use. Still, Motorola phones are prone to bloatware apps that you may not need on your phone. These apps take up storage space or slow down the device. This guide details all the unnecessary apps that you can safely delete on your Moto G Stylus 5G.

Moto G Stylus 5G (2024) review: Great hardware ruined by bad software

Moto’s hardware is getting better and better, so why can’t the Android experience keep up?

How to uninstall or disable an app on your Moto G Stylus 5G 2024

You can uninstall or disable apps you don’t need from your Moto G Stylus. Some apps cannot be uninstalled from your device. You will see the disable option if an app cannot be uninstalled. Disabling an app will hide the app from the app drawer and prevent the app from running in the background. You will also stop receiving notifications from those apps.

However, these apps will remain on your device and can receive updates (to prevent them from being updated, you must disable automatic updating in the App Manager). Below we will show you the two main methods to remove an app from your Moto G Stylus.

Method 1: Remove an unwanted app from your app drawer

  1. In your app drawer, tap and hold an app icon.
  2. Tap the I symbol Access App information.
  3. Choose Uninstall or Deactivate.

Swipe up from the bottom of your home screen to access the app drawer. You can also drag an app to the trash to uninstall it from your phone.

Method 2: Remove an unwanted app from your Moto settings

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Knock Apps.
  3. Choose All Apps.
  4. Select an app and select Uninstall or Deactivate.

Clear the app’s cache or data

When you clean the apps on Moto G Stylus, also clear the app’s cache or data, especially if you can only disable an app. You can’t uninstall the app without access to Android Debug Bridge (ADB). Clearing the cache and data helps fix app-related issues by resetting the temporary data or removing it completely. If an app stops responding or crashes, try clearing the cache before uninstalling it. Here’s how to clear the app’s cache or data.

  1. Open the app tray and tap and hold an app icon.
  2. Tap the I symbol.
  3. Choose Memory and cache.
  4. To clear the app cache, tap Clear cache.
  5. To clear the app’s storage (data), tap Clear storage.

Clearing storage (data) will delete all user data associated with this app, such as settings and login information, and will completely reset the app to the state it was in before you first used it.

How to remove system apps on Moto G Stylus 5G 2024

You can’t uninstall a system app without rooting your phone. Instead, you can freeze your unwanted apps and hide them from your sight (as an alternative to disabling them). The easiest way to do this is with Shizuku. Shizuku provides system-level API access to Android apps. It does this without having to fully root your phone.

Shizuku allows you to freeze apps, which works like disabling them. Freezing apps stops apps from running in the background and using system resources. This hides those apps from your view and allows you to unfreeze them at any time.

Freezing these apps permanently will keep them out of date. If you install new apps that require the use of your disabled system apps, they may stop working properly until you re-enable them.

Removing carrier-specific apps on Moto G Stylus 5G 2024

Depending on where you purchased your Moto G Stylus, you may discover carrier-installed apps on your device. These apps are known for their bloatware, including installing other software with lots of ads (and in cases with app managers, installing unwanted apps on your device without permission). You can easily remove these apps without looking. Some examples:

  • T-Mobile
  • T Life
  • DT Ignite (System app)
  • Verizon App Manager (System App)

If you have a virtual mobile operator (MVNO) payment plan for your Moto G Stylus, there might be bloatware from the partner carrier. MVNO providers often have policies about the pre-installed apps they can include, but the rest depends on the partnership.

If you’re using a tethered phone, it probably came with the carrier’s apps pre-installed. Unlocking your phone is the best way to avoid carrier-specific bloatware (or at least see the minimal amount). You can purchase the unlocked version from Motorola or through a partner retailer.

How about removing the Google Play Store?

Google Play Store is a system app that comes with the Moto G Stylus phone. It is also the phone’s default app store. If you remove Google Play Store, you risk other apps becoming out of date, losing notifications, not being able to connect to Play services and not working properly, and you will also lose your primary means of acquiring apps.

It is possible to go without Google, but it takes work, a willingness to try custom Android ROMs, and being comfortable with securing APKs from third-party sources.

Are you having problems with your Moto G Stylus 5G 2024?

You may have decided to cut back on bloatware to improve your phone’s performance, but that didn’t solve your overheating issues or unexpected battery drain. The Moto G Stylus is a great phone for taking notes thanks to its built-in stylus and beautiful OLED display, but it doesn’t come without its problems. If removing apps doesn’t fix the common issues, consider a factory reset and disabling more apps during setup.
