Another truck crashes into a North Buffalo Bridge

Buffalo can be a pretty wild and interesting place. There are all kinds of great things to do all over the city, from downtown to North Buffalo and everything in between.

One place that was quite busy today was a stretch of Colvin Avenue in North Buffalo, between Amherst Street and Linden Avenue, where something actually happened that shouldn’t have happened. It’s not the first time something like this has happened, and it probably won’t be the last.

The old New York Central Railroad has a railroad line that surrounds Buffalo. For most of its existenceit is called The Belt Line because as it forms a belt around the city. In its heyday, the rail line had nineteen different stations throughout the city, with the main downtown hub being on Exchange Street.

In several places where the Belt Line crossed major roads, the road was lowered and the train ran over the road on viaduct bridges. You can still see this today in Amherst near Austin Street, in Parkside near Linden, and on Colvin Ave near Crescent.

This brings us to the reason we are here: for some reason, this railway viaduct seems to attract trucks that like to crash into it.

As someone who lives in North Buffalo and drive under this bridge several times a day. I am always surprised when this happens, and yet it happens every few months. Facebook user Erin Arrigo, who also lives in North Buffalo, took these photos of the truck stuck under the bridge, with remnants of the truck still stuck to the bridge and debris scattered all over Colvin Avenue.

Fortunately, no one was injured in the accident.

Hopefully future drivers will pay attention to the large white sign indicating the safe clearance height for vehicles passing under the bridge. They probably won’t, but we can still hope they do.
