Angels use four-run rally in ninth inning to win against Astros

Zach Neto hit two home runs and scored six runs, and the Angels twice came back from behind to beat the Houston Astros 9-8 on Sunday.

The Angels trailed 4-0 in the sixth inning before scoring two runs in back-to-back innings and then taking the lead on a solo hit by Neto in the eighth inning. The Astros responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning before the Angels scored four runs in the ninth inning.

With a 9-6 lead, Jose Quijada allowed two RBI singles from Yainer Diaz and Victor Caratini to bring the game to just one point. The Angels called in Guillo Zuniga to close the game. He struck out Jeremy Pena on third base for the tying run. It was Zuniga’s second save of the season. Brock Burke (2-1) picked up the win.

Houston (85-71) begins a three-game series with Seattle (80-76) on Monday and has a chance to win the AL West with a win in that series.

The Angels loaded the bases against Astros closer Josh Hader in the ninth inning. Taylor Ward drew a walk to tie the game before Neto hit a bases-clearing double down the left field line to score three more runs.

This was Hader’s fourth blown save of the season. Hader (8-8) allowed four runs on three hits in one-third of an inning, managed two walks and no strikeouts.

Neto cut the lead in half in the sixth inning with a two-run shot in his second career multi-home run game.

Houston’s Spencer Arrighetti allowed two runs on five hits in six innings, issued no walks and struck out six no-decisions.

Griffin Canning allowed four runs on six hits, walked three times and struck out three times in 4 1/3 innings.

Jose Altuve and Alex Bregman hit home runs in the fifth inning. It was the 20th home run of the season for Altuve, who also has 22 stolen bases this season, giving him his first 20-20 season since 2017.

Angels outfielder Jordyn Adams missed his third straight game because of right knee pain. Angels manager Ron Washington continues to assess his status on a day-to-day basis. … After a bad day, right-hander Jonathan Cannon (4-10, 4.61 ERA) will face White Sox right-hander Jack Kochanowicz (2-5, 4.56 ERA) in the series opener on Tuesday in Chicago.
