Andy Murray has sharply criticized the scheduling of the US Open after the latest result of a women’s match in history at Flushing Meadows.

Zheng Qinwen completed a 7-6(2), 4-6, 6-2 victory over Donna Vekic at 2:15 a.m. local time, two minutes later than a previous meeting between two female opponents at the final Grand Slam tournament of the year.

Late finishes at the majors have been a recurring theme this year; similarly late finishes were also criticized at the Australian Open and the French Open.

And Murray, who ended his sporting career after the Olympics, called on the organizers to “sort things out.”

“Scheduling in tennis is total chaos,” the Scot said on X, formerly Twitter. “It looks so amateurish when matches are played at 2, 3 or 4 in the morning. Fix it.”

The men’s matches, played over five sets, often last late into the night in New York. The quarterfinal between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner in 2022 ended shortly before 3 a.m.

The round of 16 between Zheng and Vekic was a repeat of the Paris 2024 final, with the Chinese player once again prevailing, keeping alive her hopes of winning her first Grand Slam title in addition to her Olympic gold.

“It’s always nice to play in the night session because I’m used to it,” said Zheng. “It’s the first time I’m playing here in New York at two in the morning. It’s incredible. Thanks to the fans who are not sleeping tonight and are here supporting me.”

“She’s really hard to beat on hard courts, she put me under a lot of pressure. At Roland Garros I was in control. But today she played really aggressively. It was tough for me to play against her. It was a really nice win for me.”

The seventh-seeded player will face Aryna Sabalenka in the quarterfinals.
