Back to Black – the biopic about the late and great Amy Winehouse, will find its way to Netflix in the UK as part of a first-window deal with StudioCanal.

Marisa Abela had the daunting task of bringing Amy Winehouse, known for hits such as Back to Black, Rehab and Valerie, to life a little earlier this year with the release of Back to Black by director Sam Taylor-Johnson.

Reviews from critics and audiences were very mixed. Critics were more annoyed with the portrayal of Winehouse, while audiences were much more interested in the retelling of the singer-songwriter’s life. Johnny Oleksinski of the New York Post wrote in his review: “Perhaps a powerful film would have been hidden here if the filmmakers hadn’t made so many traditional choices to dull what was, for Hollywood, a chaotic character.”

The film is rated R and also stars Jack O’Connell, Eddie Marsan, Juliet Cowan and Lesley Manville.

An update on the Netflix app states that the film will be available on Netflix in the UK from September 12, 2024. However, according to previous information from StudioCanal, the film will likely only remain available for nine months, meaning it won’t be out of theaters until next June at the earliest.

Other StudioCanal films released on Netflix in the UK so far in 2024 include Evil little letters (which also came to Netflix US thanks to the Sony deal), Bag head, Evil Dead – Rise of the DeadAnd Past livesUpcoming titles include Paddington in Peru, PiercingAnd The Outrun.

will Back to Black be on Netflix in other countries?

In the United States, the film is distributed by Focus Features (a subsidiary of NBC Universal), meaning it falls under the second contract period with Netflix, after initially being split between Peacock and Prime Video in the first contract period. At the time of release, the film was available on Peacock. That Netflix contract window doesn’t begin for another four years, meaning the earliest the film will appear on Netflix is 2028.
