American High’s next film has landed a big star, but may not be shot in Central NY

American High has shot 20 films in Central New York over the past six years, but his next project could see a change of scenery.

Deadline reports that comedian Matt Rife will star in Rolling Loud, an upcoming film that American High founder Jeremy Garelick will direct for the Liverpool-based film studio. The R-rated comedy will also be co-produced by Live Nation Productions, which worked with Rife on his highly successful stand-up comedy tour.

According to the synopsis, “Rolling Loud” is based on the true story “of an overprotective father who makes the worst parenting decision of his life when he secretly smuggles his 13-year-old son into Rolling Loud, the world’s largest hip-hop festival. In doing so, he sets off a chaotic adventure with his reckless co-worker and an eccentric festival volunteer as they navigate wild crowds, security measures and their own family dynamics.”

Deadline reports that Rolling Loud will shoot scenes at the upcoming hip-hop festival of the same name, which is set to take place in Miami from December 13-15.

Garelick told syracuse.com | The Post-Standard that the rest of the film will be shot in a recording studio, but probably not in the Syracuse area. He had hoped to stay in the area, but said “there’s no studio here anymore” and is currently looking for alternate locations in cities like Buffalo and Rochester.

Onondaga County recently sold the DeWitt Film Center, also known as the Greater Syracuse Soundstage, which had failed to meet expectations of becoming a year-round film production venue. Swedish defense and aerospace giant Saab Inc. bought the 50,000-square-foot building in March for $5.9 million and plans to use it to produce high-tech products.

There are five other sound stages available in Central New York, but the next largest Qualified Production Facility (QPF) is the Oncenter in Syracuse, which at 35,000 square feet is almost half the size of the DeWitt center. Syracuse Studios, the former AV Zogg Middle School and Liverpool High School, where American High is headquartered, is also a QPF, but is reported to be even smaller at 7,000 square feet.

By comparison, there are at least three QPFs of 50,000 or more square feet in Western New York State, including the 80,000-square-foot Buffalo FilmWorks, which was used for “Nightmare Alley,” “A Quiet Place Part II” and “The First Purge.” Films and television shows that use a QPF are eligible for the New York State film tax credit, which is 35% for productions in Northern New York State (compared to 25% for films and television shows in New York City).

American High previously used the Greater Syracuse Soundstage for filming, as well as Syracuse Studios and other locations in Central New York. The production company, which specializes in teen comedies, has shot 20 films over the past six years and has hired well-known actors such as Charlie Day, Vince Vaughn, Pete Davidson, Sydney Sweeney, Patton Oswalt, Rainn Wilson, Danny Trejo and Kevin James.

Rife’s star status will only increase American High’s profile. He has 19 million followers on TikTok, has released several stand-up comedy specials (including two on Netflix) and has appeared on shows such as “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” “Fresh Off the Boat,” “That ’90s Show” and MTV’s “Wild ‘N Out.”

He has become one of the most popular stand-up comedians, selling out more than 30 shows in New York State over the past two years. He sold more than 600,000 tickets for his “ProbleMATTic World Tour” within 48 hours and was one of the few live acts, along with Taylor Swift, whose website crashed Ticketmaster due to high demand.

According to Deadline, Rife is planning a new world tour with Live Nation and is looking to expand his work into feature films, including “Rolling Loud” and an upcoming “gym workplace comedy currently in development.”

Additional cast members for “Rolling Loud” have not yet been announced. According to Deadline, the film is set to hit theaters next year.

Garelick most recently directed Murder Mystery 2, the Netflix film starring Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston. His other credits include writing the screenplay for The Breakup (also starring Aniston), directing titles such as The Wedding Ringer and The Binge, and producing American High films such as Big Time Adolescence, Plan B, Crush, The Ultimate Playlist of Noise, Sex Appeal and It’s a Wonderful Binge.
