Experts whose opinions were collected by the review aggregator site praised lead actors Meagan Good and Cory Hardrict, who play a married couple heading for divorce. But commentators were definitely not kind to the film as a whole.
This may have been bad news for the Madea creator’s latest film, diversity shared an astonishing statistic that came from Nielsen. Apparently after its streaming premiere on July 11, Divorce in the black reached more than 498 million minutes in its first four days of availability on Amazon Prime Video, representing an estimated 3.5 million views. The numbers continued to rise in its third week, reaching 93.2 million minutes viewed. And as if all that wasn’t crazy enough, the film has generated more sign-ups than any film produced by Amazon MGM Studios to date.
These are, to say the least, very astonishing numbers. Imagine that so many viewers are watching the film in such a short time. Of course, Tyler Perry is no stranger to such hype. If you look back to the time when his film A Fall from grace (which earned 15% on RT) came to Netflix, 26 million people saw the streaming release within the first weekwhich is an amazing feat. Based on those numbers, it obviously didn’t matter that the critics weren’t fans.
To be honest, I am still curious how Divorce in the black could have led to so many subscriptions to Prime Video given the negative coverage. One reason could be that Tyler Perry has such a loyal fan base that has faithfully followed his content for decades. And on the other hand, there’s also the possibility that some of these views are due to hate-watching. I mean, sometimes people just want to participate in any kind of discourse.
As controversial as his filmography may be, Tyler Perry has built a lucrative empire for himself – one that has left him with a serious creative footprint. He’s also been praised for using his powerful influence to add diverse voices to the industry, as he wants talented creatives of color to get the chance to work on major productions. Judging by these numbers, the efforts of those who worked on his latest flick clearly weren’t in vain.
