Amazon is informing customers who own the Echo Show 8 Photos Edition that they will no longer be able to use the primary feature. Launched last year, the smart display allows users to display their favorite pictures, although this feature comes with a price tag. For a mere fee of $2 per month, Echo Show 8 Photo Edition owners can subscribe to Amazon’s PhotosPlus service. This service allows users to make photos the “primary content you see” on their Echo Show 8 Photos Edition smart display.
The images displayed will change every 30 seconds indefinitely. Unfortunately, this will no longer happen as Amazon has decided to end support for the subscription-based service PhotosPlus.
In an email to users, Amazon explains that it is “Your PhotosPlus subscription will be automatically cancelled on September 12.” Until that day, however, users can continue to enjoy the benefits of PhotosPlus.
According to Amazon, photos will no longer be the primary home screen content on the Echo Show 8 Photos Edition after the subscription period ends. On the plus side, however, owners will still be able to use the 25GB of Amazon Photos storage.
In a statement to The Verge, Amazon spokeswoman Courtney Ramirez said the company discontinued the Echo Show 8 Photos Edition back in March, which is likely one of the main reasons it also decided to cancel the PhotosPlus subscription service.
Additionally, Ramirez says that Amazon regularly evaluates its products and services based on customer feedback. Unfortunately, in this case, it seems like not too many people were interested in paying for the service or purchasing the Echo Show 8 Photos Edition.
