Alonza Barnett III of James Madison could be nominated for an Oscar as the flop of all time

The 97th Academy Awards will take place on March 2, 2025, and will honor the best films and performances of 2024. The nominees in each category will be announced on January 17, 2025.

James Madison quarterback Alonza Barnett III was expected to be among the nominees in the Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role category.

Barnett threw two touchdown passes to lead the Dukes to a 30-7 road win over Charlotte to open the 2024 season. His most memorable moment in Saturday night’s game, however, may be this flop, a moment that could go down as the funniest of the entire college football season. After a play early in the fourth quarter, the passer got into a tussle with Charlotte defensive lineman Dre Butler. At the end of the exchange, Barnett was shoved by Butler, resulting in this all-time flop:

Both Barnett and Butler received compensatory penalties for unsportsmanlike conduct and the down was replayed.

However, we must also pay tribute to James Madison offensive lineman Joseph Simmons. The offensive tackle immediately rushed to Barnett’s aid and even went so far as to administer CPR to his quarterback.

This means he is likely to be nominated for “Best Performance by a Supporting Actor.”
