Alligator spotted near New York may swim to Empire State

A giant alligator was surprisingly spotted dangerously close to swimmers near New York.

According to the New York State DEC, the Great Lakes areas and waters in New York include Lake Erie, the Niagara River, Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River.

Lake Erie Beach Park, located on Old Lake Shore Road in Angola, New York, borders Lake Erie. The park is open to the public year-round from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.

The park also has a beach with a designated swimming area.

Alligator spotted in Lake Erie

On Sunday, visitors spotted a 4- to 6-foot-long alligator swimming in Lake Erie in Pennsylvania. Officials believe this alligator can grow up to 11 feet long.

According to the New York Post, a video shows the alligator peacefully watching “panicked swimmers” flee the water about 20 yards from the shore.

The alligator eventually left the area without incident. But what’s even more terrifying to anyone reading this is the fact that the alligator was on the loose all week.

Officials from the nature conservation authority have been searching for days.

What worries New Yorkers is the fact that Lake Erie stretches from Pennsylvania into New York State.

“Our concern is the safety of the public,” Port Authority Executive Director Julie Slomski told Go Erie. “Hopefully this alligator is safe wherever it may be.”

How did the alligator end up in the lake?

Authorities believe the alligator was an exotic pet that someone released into the lake because they could no longer care for it.
