Deadpool & Wolverine: All Wolverine variants, ranking

what a load of nonsense.

While he’s not one of the strongest mutants, he’s still respected simply because he’s more relatable than most, with all his inner conflicts and flaws. With the release of Deadpool and Wolverine, we’re taking a look back at all the Wolverine films that have been released so far.

The ranking of the Wolverine films is not chronological, but based on performance and fan reception.

Warning – Some entries may contain spoilers from the Wolverine films.

10 X-Men Origins: Wolverine

A close-up of Wolverine and Sabertooth from X-Men Origins.

  • Release date: 29 April 2009

X-Men Origins: Wolverine tells the story of James Logan and Victor Creed. Both are part of a mutant group called Team X, which also includes the notorious mercenary Wade Wilson. However, after witnessing some horrific events in the group, Logan leaves the group and is later hunted by Stryker and Victor.

The biggest flaw of X-Men Origins: Wolverine is the poorly executed CGI effects. But that’s not the only downside to the film, as it is also considered to have the worst script in the series. This film also disfigured the character Deadpool, making his first appearance on screen a terrible one. If you’re a true Wolverine fan, the deviation from the source material is also hard to stomach.

The beginning of the film is still passable, but the climax, especially the fight against Deadpool, is not that exciting to watch. However, Liev Schreiber as Sabertooth is really exceptional and one of the few good things about the film.

9 X-Men: The Last Stand

Wolverine fights enemies with extended metal claws in “X-Men: The Last Stand.”

  • Release date: 25 May 2006

The third film in the X-Men trilogy follows the resurrection of Jean Grey, also known as the Phoenix. Apparently, the film details a newly discovered cure for mutations, which leads to Magneto building his mutant army to stop the production of the cure, as they believe it could be used as a weapon against their race. The X-Men fight against the Brotherhood while facing a greater threat that can destroy everything: the Dark Phoenix.

One notable thing about this film is that there are multiple storylines and each one is so different that it makes the entire plot extremely confusing. Due to the presence of many heroes in this film, Logan is somewhat overshadowed. Despite Hugh Jackman’s commendable performance, the film failed to resonate with many X-Men fans.

8 X-Men: First Class

Logan is approached by Erik and Xavier in X-Men: First Class.

  • Release date: 25 May 2011

In the film, we see Xavier and Magneto recruiting a group of militants to help them fight the Hellfire Club and prevent nuclear war. Erik Lehnsherr, aka Magneto, and Charles Xavier set out to recruit mutants, and when they visit Wolverine at the bar, they don’t get a very friendly reception.

Although Logan only makes a cameo appearance for a few seconds in X-Men: First Class, he certainly sets a strong reference for the upcoming films. The film itself is definitely one of the best X-Men films ever.

7 X-Men: Apocalypse

Wolverine as Weapon X in X-Men Apocalypse.

  • Release date: 27 May 2016

In Apocalypse, the X-Men face a new threat: a mutant named En Sabah Nur, believed to be the world’s first mutant. When he awakens in the present, he is disillusioned with humanity and plans to wipe it out completely with the help of his companions.

Now, X-Men: Apocalypse isn’t exactly a Wolverine movie, as it only features a cameo from Logan. However, this limited screen time is significant as it ties into Wolverine’s backstory and his transformation into Weapon X. We see Wolverine in a state of utter rage, tearing apart anything and anyone in his path. As Weapon X, the portrayal shown in the film is quite accurate, making the scene extremely satisfying.

5 Wolverine – Way of the Warrior

The deadly Wolverine fights against Shingen in “The Wolverine”.

  • Release date: 26 July 2013

In this film, Logan travels to Japan to visit his dying friend Yashida, whose life he once saved. However, shortly after the funeral, he comes into conflict with Yakuza and some mutants when Yakuza tries to kidnap Yashida’s granddaughter.

After the failure of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, we finally got a decent Wolverine movie based on the comics by Frank Miller. Directed by James Mangold, it features some of the most epic moments. Everything from the script to the acting is on point. The climax could have been more impressive, but it turned into a CGI mess when Wolverine fights a giant robot. Despite the unnecessary special effects, the movie is still worth watching and Hugh Jackman’s acting is truly commendable.

4 X-Men: Days of Future Past

Wolverine fights Magneto in “Days of Future Past.”

  • Release date: 23 May 2014

The film is set in the future, where powerful robots threaten the existence of mutants called Sentinels, created from Mystique’s DNA. Their only hope is to travel back and convince Mystique to prevent future events from occurring.

From a great cast to incredible performances, Days Of Future Past has it all. Bryan Singer’s return to the franchise as director resulted in one of the most memorable X-Men films of all time. The pacing is amazing and the relationships and chemistry between the characters seem incredibly natural.

X2 follows the style of the first film perfectly, with many improvements, and introduces a number of interesting characters. Wolverine, who is the focus of the story, is portrayed in the best possible way in the film as he faces off against William Stryker.

The best part for Wolverine fans is the character development of Logan, which, coupled with amazing dialogue and stunning visual effects, gives us one of the best Wolverine movies ever. The soundtrack is catchy and fits perfectly into the scenes. And finally, the climax is beautifully executed in a very impressive way, truly a kiss from the chef.

Using a device, Deadpool travels across the multiverse to find a variant of Wolverine who can help him save his timeline.

This film is full of emotion and never-ending comedy. Despite the anticipation and high expectations of the audience, Deadpool and Wolverine did not disappoint what they expected.

Jackman’s return to the role is perfect in every way. We have it all in this film, from the great acting of Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman to the iconic Wolverine suit from the comics. The bromance and fight scenes are truly spectacular. In addition, the iconic cameos and Deadpool’s unmatched humor make this film one of the best superhero movies of all time.

1 Logan

Hugh Jackman looks much older than usual in the trailer for Logan.

  • Release date: March 3, 2017

The action takes place in the year 2029, a time when the entire mutant race is threatened with extinction. The older and weaker Logan is approached by a mutant girl who has his DNA in her blood and has similar superpowers to him.

Undoubtedly the best Wolverine movie of all time, this film features an emotional storyline with plenty of heart-wrenching moments. It doesn’t hold back on the violence and gore, which really brings out the rage that Wolverine is famous for.

Logan is truly one of the most complex yet darkest works of cinema. The action sequences are some of the best and the climax is both tragic and emotional. This is one of those films that both Wolverine and superhero fans must see.
