All teams confirmed for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup: Who will play in this year’s Women’s T20 World Cup?

Here’s everything you need to know about who will be attending this year’s event in the United Arab Emirates.

Ahead of another exciting year in white-ball cricket, the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 promises to be one of the standout events of the season as the world’s biggest and best national teams come together to compete for the format’s ultimate prize.

Just over a year and a half after Australia won a record sixth title in South Africa, the country will now attempt to successfully defend its title in the United Arab Emirates, which has been relocated from Bangladesh for security reasons.

But while the Southern Stars are among the favourites to win the trophy again, many other teams also have high hopes of winning the award themselves, especially with many of the game’s superstars looking to write their names in the history books.

Former finalists South Africa and former winners England and the West Indies all fancy themselves, while India and New Zealand are also keen to make a splash on the biggest stage.

But who exactly will compete in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024? GOAL gives you an overview of every team that has qualified for the tournament so far.

When will the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 take place?

The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 will in the United Arab Emirates between Thursday, October 3rd and Sunday, October 20th. The tournament takes place in two stadiums: Dubai International Cricket Stadiumlocated in the capital Dubai, and Sharjah Cricket Stadiumlocated in the northeastern city of Sharjah.

The event was originally scheduled to take place in Bangladesh, but was postponed in mid-August due to security concerns amid the political climate in the country.

All qualified teams for the 10-nation field at the 2024 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup have now been confirmed. One is automatically included as hosts, six more will be considered based on previous tournament performances, one will be given its place based on its position in the world rankings and the final two will be decided through a qualifying tournament.

Bangladesh automatically qualified as the original host nation for its fifth tournament appearance. The top six teams from the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 will join Bangladesh.

The other teams are Australia, England, India, New Zealand, South Africa, And West Indies. After last year’s tournament Pakistan joined them as the highest ranked team in the ICC Women’s T20 Team Rankings.

Scotland And Sri Lanka have occupied the last two places. To secure their place, they qualified for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifier 2024.

List of 2024 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup teams

Bangladesh

First appearance: 2014
Best performance: First round (2014-2023)
The facts: Bangladesh had to go through a qualifying tournament to secure a place last year, but this time they were automatically given a place as original hosts.

Still, expectations are low for them. After finishing bottom of Group A in South Africa and never making it past the opening stages of the tournament, it is unlikely they will do so again.

Australia

First appearance: 2009
Best performance: Winners (2010, 2012, 2014, 2018, 2020, 2023)
The facts: Having already won six of eight possible titles and also lost another final, Australia is a foregone conclusion that they will be one of the favourites this year.

They have a particularly good chance of defending their title and, led by Alyssa Healy – arguably the best captain in world cricket, both men’s and women’s – they start as favourites.

England

First appearance: 2009
Best performance: Winner (2016)
The facts: Since winning the title for the first time on home soil, England have not managed to return to their best form in this tournament, despite coming close on three occasions.

After losing in the finals in 2012, 2014 and 2018, they will be hoping to go one step further in Bangladesh. It would be a huge disappointment if they did not make it to the knockout stages, having only failed to make it to the knockout stages once before.

India

First appearance: 2009Best performance: Second place (2020)The facts: For a team so often associated with cricket dominance, it is no surprise that India not only failed to win the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, but also reached only one final.

They lost to Australia in the 2020 edition but are the highest-ranked team in the world after their rivals and England. They will fancy their chances, especially in an event that is not on home soil but in a climate that is favourable to their bowlers.

New Zealand

First appearance: 2009
Best performance: Second place (2009, 2010)
The facts: Two consecutive defeats in the first two finals of the competition are the best New Zealand have achieved in this competition, having failed to close the gap in the intervening tournaments.

But as one of the top five ranked teams in the world, they have high hopes that this time they will finally be able to break the established rankings and write their name on the trophy.

South Africa

First appearance: 2009
Best performance: Second place (2023)
The facts: South Africa came close to breaking Australia’s monopoly in the tournament last year at the home event, but lost in the final by 19 runs.

However, this does give them hope of an impressive result. The desire for revenge will likely drive them to another impressive campaign. However, they will still have a lot of work to do to produce impressive results away from home.

West Indies

First appearance: 2009
Best performance: Winner (2016)
The facts: The West Indies, who won the trophy as upstarts eight years ago, remain one of only three nations to have lifted the trophy, but their poor performances since then have arguably prevented them from building on that foundation.

After another first-round exit in 2023, they are desperate to at least finally get back into the knockout phase, and with a favorable draw they could fancy their chances this time around.

Pakistan

First appearance: 2009Best performance: First round (2009-2023)The facts: Although Pakistan has had great success in men’s football, it has failed to translate that success to the women’s teams, especially in this tournament.

The unfortunate four-team format could be to blame, but they have never made it to the knockout stages, so they will be keen to break that curse.

Scotland

Scotland Women’s T20 Cricket TeamCricket Scotland

First appearance: N/A
Best performance: N/A
The facts: Scotland are the only debutants in this year’s tournament. Few would have given Scotland a real chance of making it to the final in a qualifying group that included Sri Lanka, Thailand, the USA and Uganda.

Not only did they finish second, they then beat Ireland in the semi-finals to book their place. The team is now ready for its debut in Bangladesh in October.

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka women's cricket team Getty Images

First appearance: 2009
Best performance: First round (2009-2023)
The facts: Of all the teams that had to qualify through the qualifying route, Sri Lanka seemed the safest bet – and it was: The team emerged victorious and secured their place in this tournament.

They have taken part in every edition of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup to date but have never progressed beyond the first round. They face a tough task if they want to improve their record here, if they can.
