All films referenced in Sabrina Carpenter’s Taste video with Jenna Ortega

Summer just got a whole lot shorter, prettier… and scarier. Sabrina Carpenter just released her music video for Taste featuring Jenna Ortega, and there are movie references galore.

First she gave us “Espresso,” then the revelation that Barry Keoghan was more than just a guest star on “Please, Please Please.” Now former Disney star Sabrina Carpenter has released her latest album, “Short n’ Sweet.”

The video for “Taste” has also been released. Former scream queen Jenna Ortega plays the lead role. The horror movie references don’t stop there, though, as the two fight over a nameless fictional friend.

But how many references are there? From the most obvious to the least likely (not including Scream itself), here’s the complete breakdown of the Sabrina Carpenter film Taste.

Death suits her well

The overall look and feel of the video is taken from the 1992 kitsch classic Death Becomes Her, in which Goldie Hawn and Meryl Streep play two women who fight over the same man while drinking a potion to become immortal.

Carpenter caught Ortega with a friend, who we assume is the same one. Each tries to kill the other in different ways. Each time one is attacked, they miraculously come back to life (see Sabrina, whose chest was literally ripped out on the hospital bed). The only person who actually dies is the friend himself.

Even if the references aren’t always accurate, the film’s presence is palpable. The couple use voodoo dolls to hurt each other (very Isabella Rossellini), fall off balconies, and both look stunning at their friend’s funeral.

Ginger cookies

The only positive about Carpenter falling off a balcony and getting impaled on a fence is that she was able to recreate the Ginger Snaps reference we know and love.

Not everyone knows this horror film, so we want to bring you up to speed: The 2000 horror fantasy film is about Brigitte and Ginger, two biological sisters who have a “passion for death”. Ginger changes after she is bitten by a dog, and from then on all hell breaks loose.

Fun fact: Ginger Snaps was the inspiration for another movie on this list… the one where the two kiss.

Kill Bill

Jenna Ortega as Elle Driver in the music video “Taste”

If you blink, you’ll miss it, but it’s a reference to Kill Bill. Carpenter is impaled by a fence when she falls off a balcony after a gunshot wound (ouch), she’s rushed to the hospital… where she’s met by none other than Ortega, disguised as Elle Driver. Ortega tries to kill her with resuscitation pads, but things quickly turn ugly.

If you think back to Quentin Tarantino’s 2003 film, you’ll remember Daryl Hannah in her iconic white costume, complete with eye patch. As a member of the Deadly Vipers, Driver breaks into a hospital to kill the Bride with a lethal injection.

Unfortunately, the reinterpretation of the music video lacks the iconic whistle, but Ortega does a great job nonetheless. One could also argue that the typography of the credits follows Beatrix Kiddo’s traditional yellow.

Psycho

It wouldn’t be a horror movie homage without Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho, and thankfully Carpenter got that. A scene midway through the film shows Ortega in the shower with her boyfriend, and the pop star catches her red-handed – with a giant knife in tow.

Things look a little different from here. Unlike Janet Leigh screaming in the shower while she’s murdered by a stranger, the two of them hack each other to pieces… although no one dies.

It’s not entirely clear how Ortega managed to hide a giant gun while naked in the shower with someone else, but hey, at least she was prepared. The 1960 original is still considered one of the best horror films of all time, and this isn’t the first (or last) time it’s been parodied.

The Addams Family in a crazy tradition

In the second Addams Family film, our favorite horror gang is rudely interrupted by the selfish greed of Debbie Jelinsky, played by Joan Cusack.

Still, she did have at least a few great outfits. As she descends the Addams Stairs, Debbie wears an over-the-top white ball gown, complete with ruffled feathers.

We see the same outfit on Carpenter shortly after the Psycho debacle… only this time she has lost an arm.

Jennifer’s body

A more insidious reference: Any lesbian will tell you that Carpenter and Ortega’s unexpected kiss is a reference to the 2009 horror film Jennifer’s Body.

At this point in the music video, Ortega is at her wits’ end. She’s tried every way she can to kill Carpenter, but she still won’t give up. She takes refuge in the pool and happily kisses her boyfriend… until he turns into our blonde pop icon.

The one scene from Jennifer’s Body you’ll probably remember is Jennifer and Anita’s impromptu slumber party (it has a whopping 427 million views on YouTube). While Jennifer explains why she kills boys, the two make out. It gets hot and heavy before Anita freaks out, like Ortega did in the scene above.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre

Their kissing doesn’t do much, however, as Ortega once again loses his composure. Out of nowhere (she is Really (She’s good at finding weapons on demand) uses a chainsaw to saw into Carpenter’s stomach, blood pouring from all directions.

Of course, it’s a no-brainer as to which movie this refers to: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. In the 1974 horror film, Sally, Franklin, and their friends are killed one by one thanks to a killer with a chainsaw. It turns out that a luxury mansion and a pool don’t stop you from using one.

Halloween ends

A much smaller Easter egg is the question of who plays our beloved friend – it is Rohan Campbell, who we know from “Halloween Ends”.

His character Corey didn’t fare much better in the last part of the series. Just like here, he ended up dead in the final scenes and even accidentally killed a child he was looking after at the beginning of the film.

Netflix fans may also know him as Lonergan from Virgin River, but only in four episodes.
