Alan Smith makes cheeky remark about Harry Kane's record

Alan Smith took a cheeky swipe at Harry Kane after Bayern Munich’s 9-2 win on Tuesday as Kane attempted to equal his European record.

Bayern Munich defeated GNK Dinamo 9-2 on Tuesday night, with Harry Kane scoring four of their goals.

OptaJoe subsequently pointed out that Kane was the first Englishman to score four goals in a Champions League or European Cup match since Alan Smith for Arsenal against FK Austria Wien in 1991.

But Smith hit back on Twitter, saying simply: “I didn’t need any penalties.”

It is certainly true that Kane had a lot of help in his four-goal performance. The striker took three penalties on the night, none of which he won himself.

The first goal was won by Aleksandar Pavlovic after a foul, the second goal was won by Eric Dier after his header was blocked with a hand, and the third goal was won by Alphonso Davies after someone stepped on his foot.

In contrast, Smith scored all four goals against Austria Wien from open play, making him the last Englishman to score four goals without taking a penalty in a Champions League or European Cup match.
