Alan Bowman cautioned for unsportsmanlike conduct in connection with finger guns

play

Oklahoma State quarterback Alan Bowman made a potentially costly mistake late in the fourth quarter on Saturday after he had just thrown a 36-yard pass to Brennan Presley, bringing the Cowboys to the Arkansas six-yard line.

Bowman, a seventh-year senior with plenty of college experience, celebrated the play in a 28-28 tie by taunting the Arkansas sideline, which earned him an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Bowman curled both index fingers into guns and pointed them at the Razorbacks’ sideline after the throw.

The play pushed Oklahoma State back to the Arkansas 21-yard line, which eventually led to them kicking a field goal that gave them a 31-28 lead in the fourth quarter. Bowman finished the regulation period completing 26 of 46 passes for 325 yards with one touchdown and one interception. The Cowboys trailed 14-0 in the first quarter and 21-7 at halftime, but were able to mount a comeback in the second half.

Without Bowman’s penalty, Oklahoma State theoretically would have had a better chance of scoring a touchdown, which would have put Arkansas under more pressure on its final drive. The Razorbacks scored a field goal on the next drive as time expired to tie the game and send the game into overtime.
