Alabama residents urged to avoid potential power lines and flooding as storm approaches

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Rough weather is expected in Alabama in the wake of Hurricane Francine, but the threat doesn’t always end when the storm passes.

The Red Cross advises affected residents not to assess the damage too quickly. They should rather wait until it is safe outside.

Power lines may be down and difficult to see at night.

Live wires can cause electric shock. The Red Cross recommends that residents avoid these wires until the power company gives the all-clear.

The Red Cross explains that in flash floods, just two feet of water is enough to move a heavy vehicle.

When drivers see flooding, they are asked to turn around – they will not drown.

People should also avoid walking through floodwaters, as there may be broken glass and other debris beneath the surface.

The storm could also cause Alabama residents to see more snakes.

“Often you see storms not only disrupt wildlife, but potentially destroy their homes and habitat and uproot some of the trees they were living under,” said Annette Rowland of the Alabama-Mississippi Red Cross. “You see a lot of snakes come out. You don’t always know if it’s a venomous snake or a dangerous snake.”

The population is asked to avoid flooding and damage, but if absolutely necessary, the Red Cross recommends wearing suitable footwear, thick clothing and work gloves.
