AL.com calls Georgia Tech a more attractive option for Big Ten than FSU and Clemson

Joseph Goodman of AL.com got a little too caught up in the Georgia Tech hype after the Yellow Jackets’ 24:21 Surprise victory about FSU from Dublin, Ireland, and claims that GA Tech is a better option for the Big Ten than the Noles or Clemson.

“Georgia Tech is a more attractive choice for the Big Ten than Florida State or even Clemson,” Goodman said. “Tech is an elite university with a long and proud history of success in college football. In addition to being a Big Ten qualifier, Tech is located in the middle of the largest city in the Deep South.”

“Georgia Tech has no sympathy for the SEC. The league plays its championship game in Atlanta, and there was a time when Tech’s games against Alabama and Auburn were as bitter as Tech’s rivalry with Georgia. The game for superconference expansion is not over. The Big Ten has already swallowed the Pac-12’s best teams. If the ACC disbands, the Big Ten and Fox would gladly expand south. Tech won’t be down forever.”

Georgia Tech won’t be down forever. Goodman is right about that. But when the Yellow Jackets are back on their feet, they still won’t come close to the cultural relevance of a Clemson or FSU team coached by Dabo Swinney.

Look at the number and lineage of NFL players Tech is responsible for. Now compare it to the Noles and Tigers.

There is no comparison.

Sure, the right coach can change that trajectory, but Georgia Tech will always trail Georgia in its own state and have to compete with the Atlanta Falcons in its own city. There will likely never be a Tech takeover, and the school’s academic standards will always limit its talent pool.

The Yellow Jackets are a great story right now, but by the end of the season, FSU and Clemson will have much more value to the Big Ten and any other Power 4 conference looking to poach schools from the ACC if that conference falls apart.
