AJ Griffin, 2022 first-round pick, seriously considering ending his NBA retirement

Rockets forward AJ Griffin could retire from basketball, Shams Charania of The Athletic reported Thursday, saying he is “seriously considering that option.”

Griffin, 21, was selected by the Hawks as the No. 16 overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft.

He played the first two seasons of his career in Atlanta before being traded to the Rockets in the offseason as part of a three-team deal with the Heat.

Charania reported that “teams are preparing for his departure from football,” suggesting that retirement is quite possible.

The Duke University product had a strong rookie year with the Hawks in the 2022-23 season, averaging 8.9 points per game in 19.5 minutes per game while shooting 46.5 percent from the field and 39 percent from 3-point range.

Griffin took a step back in his sophomore season last year, playing in only 20 games due to injuries and personal reasons, averaging 2.4 points in 8.6 minutes per game.

He was expected to become a rotation player for Houston next season after the team traded a mid-second-round draft pick for the 6-foot-6 winger.

Griffin spoke about his off-field issues last December, but did not elaborate on what he was struggling with personally.

“I would say I’m glad to be back,” Griffin said on Dec. 28, according to Sports Illustrated. “The team has been great and supportive during this time where I’ve been a little bit away for personal reasons. I definitely want to keep it short and not give everything away.”

Griffin is the son of longtime NBA player Adrian Griffin, who was fired as head coach of the Bucks last season after just 43 games.
