Air quality warning for Cincinnati on Tuesday, highs expected at 100

An air quality warning is in effect in the Greater Cincinnati area on Tuesday as heat and humidity set in.

The Southwest Ohio Air Quality Agency has issued an alert that is valid until 11:59 p.m. Tuesday. It affects Butler, Clermont, Hamilton and Warren counties in Ohio, Boone, Campbell and Kenton counties in Kentucky and Dearborn County in Indiana.

Ozone levels are expected to be in the “unhealthy for sensitive groups” range on the Air Quality Index. When the agency issues an alert, it warns the public about higher levels of pollutants and particulate matter that can affect health.

The air quality warning comes as sweltering weather sets in in Cincinnati this week. Temperatures will peak at around 98 degrees on Tuesday and Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington. They won’t fall below 90 degrees until the end of the work week, when temperatures in the 80s are forecast. On the hottest days, heat indices could reach as high as 102 degrees.

Here are some best practices to follow, according to the Air Quality Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:

  • Stay in air-conditioned indoor spaces if possible.
  • Take the bus, carpool, bike or walk instead of driving as exhaust fumes are too high. If you must drive, combine trips and don’t let your car idle.
  • Do not build campfires or burn leaves or other garden waste. Fires can produce harmful pollutants.
  • Save electricity by turning off lights and unplugging unused appliances and electronics.
  • Make sure you drink plenty of fluids. If you have to work outside, take breaks. Choose lighter activities, such as walking rather than running.
