An Air Force Academy cadet died on campus Wednesday evening.
Avery Koonce, a 19-year-old freshman from Taylor, Texas, was found unconscious in her dormitory, according to a press release from the academy.
“We lost an incredible teammate last night – although she was with us for only a short time, Avery made a positive impact on her unit, her intercollegiate team and her class – her loss will be felt throughout USAFA,” Lt. Gen. Tony Bauernfeind, Air Force Academy superintendent, said in a written statement. “Our team is focused on supporting Avery’s family, Cadet Squadron 38, the track and field team and the entire Academy family.”
Academy first responders were called and attempted life-saving measures, the statement said. The cause of death is currently under investigation.
Koonce was an athlete on the women’s track and field team. She was a standout runner at Thrall High School, according to Taylor Press. In 2023, she placed second in the 100-meter dash and fourth in the pole vault at the 2A state meet, the Press reported.
In a post on X last year, she celebrated her appointment to the Academy.
“I am so excited to announce my commitment to the United States Air Force Academy as a track and field athlete! I am eternally grateful to everyone who has supported me along the way. All glory to God,” she posted on December 28, 2023.
A comprehensive range of support services are available to cadets, faculty and staff, including chaplains, psychologists, leaders and others, the statement said.
There were numerous posts of condolence for Koonce on social media.
“God cries tears of pain with us. Rest in peace,” wrote one anonymous person.
