After Hurricane Helene, new systems are emerging in the Atlantic

PEMBROPE PARK, Fla – Following the widespread impact of Hurricane Helene, meteorologists tracked five systems. None posed an immediate threat to South Florida, but one in the southwest Caribbean moved north and grew stronger.

On Sunday afternoon, National Hurricane Center forecasters were tracking Disturbance 2, a widespread low pressure area in the western Caribbean that could strengthen into a tropical depression during the week and move northwest into the Gulf later in the week.

NHC meteorologists warned that Tropical Depression 12, a system in the eastern Atlantic, became more organized throughout the day after a “deep burst of convection” overnight helped form “a well-defined closed vortex.”

NHC meteorologists expected Tropical Storm Joyce east of the Caribbean to “turn northward” and weaken on Monday and Tuesday. In the North Atlantic, NHC meteorologists reported that Hurricane Isaac had weakened to a tropical storm that “will hit the Azores in the next few days.” Disturbance 3, a tropical wave, occurred in the eastern Atlantic.
