African American Women and Power | The Office of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex

This morning, The Duchess of Sussex joined Vice President Francia Márquez for an engaging panel discussion entitled “Afro-Colombian Women and Power: Voices for Equality.” The event took place in the vibrant city of Cali, Colombia and highlighted the successes and challenges faced by Afro-Colombian female leaders and entrepreneurs.

A powerful symbol of hope and progress, Márquez’s initiative brought together prominent female leaders from across Colombia to talk about their careers, entrepreneurship, and the unique joys and challenges they have faced. The audience was also treated to performances by Afro-Colombian musicians Nidia Gongora and Cynthia Montano, who brought the Duchess and Vice President to their feet with their stirring music.

The event’s final panel featured the Duchess, Vice President Marquez and Benaifer Nowrojee, President of the Open Society Foundation. The discussion focused on their experiences as women of color in positions of influence and their efforts to empower the next generation of female leaders.

The Duchess began her speech in Spanish, expressing her deep appreciation for Colombian hospitality. She praised the country’s culture and history, described the visit as a dream and stressed the strong sense of community she felt there.

She also stressed the importance of ensuring that women and girls are heard, respected and recognized in all areas of life, a core principle of her philanthropic work.

“I find inspiration in the strong women around me, of course my mother is one of them. So much of my approach is less about the struggle and more about how we present ourselves in a room and flood things with love, kindness and generosity.” – Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex

The event concluded with an exciting fashion show by local designers, celebrating the creativity and talent of the Colombian fashion scene.
