Aces and Liberty win and secure exciting WNBA semifinals | WNBA

Kelsey Plum scored a personal playoff high of 29 points on Tuesday night and WNBA Most Valuable Player A’ja Wilson added a double-double as the fourth-seeded Las Vegas Aces beat the Seattle Storm 83-76 to advance to the quarterfinals in two games.

The Aces, the two-time defending champions, will begin a best-of-five semifinal series on the road against the top-seeded New York Liberty on Sunday. Las Vegas lost all three of its regular-season games to New York, but looked like champions again in the home stretch, finishing the season 9-1.

Plum made 11 of 15 shots from the field, while Wilson added 24 points and 13 rebounds (a game-high) to give the Aces a 45-30 basket-dominating win. Las Vegas’ Chelsea Gray added 12 points and nine assists.

Gabby Williams scored 20 points to lead fifth-seeded Seattle, while Nneka Ogwumike added 16 points and 10 rebounds. Ezi Magbegor returned after missing four games due to a concussion and scored 14 points. Skylar Diggins-Smith added 13 points and 10 assists.

The Storm took their only lead with 7:58 left in the game on a Mercedes Russell putback, but Las Vegas quickly regained control with seven straight points. Jackie Young scored with 6:05 left for a 71-65 lead and the Aces held the lead from there.

Las Vegas got off to a strong start in its attempt to knock off Seattle, with Plum and Wilson each scoring 12 points in the first quarter. The Aces led 23-7 less than five minutes into the game before settling for a 30-20 lead in the second quarter.

Seattle controlled most of the second period and pulled within 39-38 on Magbegor’s layup at 2:21, but the Aces scored the last six points of the first half, with Wilson hitting two free throws with 2.8 seconds left to make it 45-38 at halftime.

The Storm tied the game twice in the first four minutes of the third quarter, but Las Vegas fought back on Wilson’s layup with 3:05 left to take a 57-51 lead. Plum’s floater with 6.8 seconds left gave the Aces a 62-57 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Atlanta Dream – New York Liberty 82-91

Sabrina Ionescu scored 36 points, setting a new playoff high, Jonquel Jones had a double-double and the Liberty completed their 2-0 first-round victory over the Dream with a 91-82 home win on Tuesday.

Top-seeded Liberty advanced to the semifinals for the second consecutive year by defeating eighth-seeded Dream 83-69 in the first game of the best-of-three series on Sunday.

New York will now face the fourth-seeded Aces, who won 2-0 on Tuesday.

Ionescu made 12 of 23 shots, including 5 of 11 three-pointers, and added nine assists. She put the Liberty ahead for good with a three-pointer that made it 70-67 with 7:17 left in the fourth quarter.

Jones scored 20 points on 8 of 12 shooting and grabbed 13 rebounds. Breanna Stewart added 13 points and Leonie Fiebich scored nine for New York.

Allisha Gray scored 26 points to lead Atlanta, which was eliminated in the first round of the playoffs for the second consecutive year. Rhyne Howard scored 19 points, Tina Charles added 14 and Naz Hillmon contributed six points and 10 rebounds.

The Dream tied the score at 67-67 with 9:01 left on a three-pointer by Nia Coffey and trailed 73-72 after Gray’s fifth three-pointer of the night with 6:03 left. From there, the Liberty took control and went on a 12-2 run that put the game out of reach.

New York took an 82-74 lead after Fiebich’s three-point play, before Fiebich’s three-pointer made it 85-74 with 3:37 minutes left. The Liberty maintained at least a seven-point lead until the end.

New York made eight more free throws than Atlanta and had an 18-11 lead in points from turnovers.

The Dream led 28-19 after a perfect first quarter from Gray, who scored 14 points on 5-of-5 shooting, including four three-pointers. She went scoreless in the second quarter while the Liberty used a 21-8 run to get within 40-36 midway through the quarter. Atlanta responded with a 12-3 run and went into halftime with a 48-43 lead after Charles hit a jump shot with three seconds left in the first half.

The Dream took a 55-47 lead on Howard’s three-pointer before New York pulled ahead 63-59 with 1:52 left in the third quarter. Ionescu scored 11 points for the Liberty in the third quarter, while Gray ended their drought with a late goal to bring Atlanta within 65-64 heading into the fourth quarter.
