According to The Sunday Times, an anti-terrorism technology group fears Musk’s X membership will jeopardise its credibility

(Reuters) – A tech industry anti-terrorism organization is concerned about content posted by the Palestinian militant group Hamas on Elon Musk’s X and is worried about the social media platform’s membership on its board, The Sunday Times reported.

Members of the Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism (GIFCT) believe the group’s credibility is undermined by X’s membership and position on the board, reports The Sunday Times. The GIFCT also includes major social media groups Facebook, Microsoft, Twitter and Alphabet’s YouTube.

X Corp and the Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

According to the Sunday Times, X, formerly known as Twitter, is now the social media platform where it is easiest to find Hamas videos. It cited the Community Security Trust (CST), a charity that fights extremism and anti-Semitism, as a reference.

It was said that within 10 minutes, CST researchers were able to find propaganda videos on X from the terrorist groups Hamas, Hezbollah and Palestinian Islamic Jihad, which are banned by the British government.

According to The Sunday Times, a statement in the 2023 annual report of the GIFCT’s independent advisory committee raising concerns about trust and safety online was addressed to X.

The advisory body said it was “increasingly concerned about the significant reduction in online trust and safety features on certain platforms and a perceived reduction in the priority of the issue, which negatively impacts companies’ ability to moderate extremist content online.”

According to the Sunday Times, Musk allowed banned extremists back on X, allowed anyone to pay for a verification token, and fired large parts of the content moderation team, part of the billionaire’s strategy to turn X into a platform for “free speech.”

The GIFCT was founded in 2017 under pressure from the US and European governments. The Sunday Times reported that X, a founding member of the organisation, is now no longer making his full financial contribution to the anti-organisation.
