According to the National Weather Service, the tornado in North Carolina was a category EF 2

HARRELLS, NC (WNCN) — Half of a roof was torn off and several other homes were damaged when a tornado confirmed as an EF-2 by the National Weather Service struck Wednesday afternoon.

The EF-2 confirmation came Friday evening after the NWS collected and released data. The tornado’s maximum width was reported as 40 yards and its maximum speed was 115 mph. The tornado’s path was about 4.6 miles long, the NWS added.

The tornado touched down as an EF-0 at 2:09 p.m. Wednesday, according to the NWS, and lasted about 11 minutes. Winds began four miles southeast of Harrells and tracked northwest before dissipating just two miles southwest of Harrells.

The following timeline of events was also compiled by the NWS survey:

  • Tornado lands in the far north of Pender County as a weak EF-0
  • Crosses Sampson County along Willard Road
  • Several branches and thin hardwood trunks were broken off when the tree drove into a corn field
  • Tornado remains on the ground northwest to US-421 and reaches strength EF-1
  • Causes minor damage to the roof of a one-story residential building and breaks off trees and branches.
  • It runs through dense forest with few road accesses. It later crosses Wildcat Road and Bland School Road.
  • It strengthens to an EF 2 storm and causes significant damage to “several well-constructed residential structures.”
  • The tornado continues its path for about another 0.5 miles through an open field and lifts off before reaching Belvin Maynard Road

Of the damaged solid homes, the first was hit on the “western side of the circulation,” according to the NWS. Portions of the metal roof were ripped off and scattered items from the house were thrown into the front yard.

The second house had several windows smashed, likely causing about half of the roof to be blown off and thrown into the cornfield behind the house.

No one was injured in Wednesday’s tornado in Sampson County, but a man died the next morning in a EF-3 tornado in Wilson County.
