According to NCDOT, all roads in western NC should be considered closed, including major ones

If you’re thinking about traveling to or through Western North Carolina in the coming days, you better think again.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation said Friday that all roads in the region should be considered closed. Torrential rains from Hurricane Helene, now a tropical depression, flooded many streets and washed out others. Landslides and fallen trees and lines also blocked the path.

“Motorists should not drive in this area, should not attempt to drive through standing water, and must respect barricades and road closure signs,” NCDOT wrote on its travel advisory website driversc.gov.

It’s not just local streets or city streets that are congested. Interstates 40 and 26 were closed in several locations near Asheville and the Tennessee line Friday, and NCDOT says they may not reopen until Saturday evening, when they do.

A photo widely shared online Friday afternoon shows the eastbound lanes of I-40 washed into the Pigeon River Gorge near the Tennessee line. NCDOT spokesman Jamie Kritzer says it’s not clear how long repairs there might take.

Other interstate closures include:

All lanes of I-26 south of Asheville between Exit 49 (US 64) and Exit 53 (Upward Road) due to flooding.

All lanes of I-40 one mile west of Exit 64 (NC 9) near Black Mountain due to flooding.

All lanes of I-40 between Exit 66 (Ridgecrest) and Exit 72 (Old Fort) due to a mudslide.

All lanes of I-40 at the Tennessee State Line due to the mudslide.

All lanes of I-40 at Exit 20 (US 276) due to flooding.

All lanes of I-40 eastbound at Exit 4 (NC 191) due to flooding.

All lanes of I-40 westbound at Exit 7 (Cold Springs Creek Road) due to flooding.
