Michael Johnson has launched a new athletics league that he hopes will revolutionize the sport, and he tells TMZ Sports he absolutely wants Noah Lyles and all the other big stars are there!
The US Olympic legend officially began Grand Slam course in June… and after all the exciting action at the Paris Games, he told us he hoped the league could build on the momentum.
In other words, Michael wants fans to not only pay attention every four years, but also to ensure that the sport remains relevant to the millions of spectators in Paris.
GST will consist of 96 athletes competing in four mega-events (think major championships in golf and tennis) over various distances (100m, 200m, etc.) starting in April 2025… and Johnson says he has already considered bringing the fastest man in the world on board.
However, the Track and Field Hall of Fame member says he also wants to get Lyles’ rivals to join him and challenge the Team USA star, knowing that “that’s what people want,” just like the other big names making waves on the world’s racetracks.
In fact, Michael has already signed Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone as ambassador.
Johnson, who has won four Olympic gold medals, said there would be plenty of incentives for the world’s best athletes to sign up… and promised base pay and big prize money (totaling in the millions).
As for the sport as a whole, Johnson says he likes what he sees … but he believes his league can take the stars to a whole new level.
